Vantela: A Playful Display Font That Brings Brand Identities to Life

Opening the Project: A Blank Canvas and a Fresh Font Choice

It was one of those mornings where the coffee was brewed, the mood board was open, and the client’s brief was clear: create a warm, approachable, and slightly whimsical brand identity for a new local café. The concept centered around cozy vibes, handcrafted goods, and a dash of personality. I needed a font that could carry that tone without feeling forced or overly trendy. That’s when I remembered Vantela — a display font that promised fun, legibility, and a touch of character.

First Impressions: What Makes Vantela Stand Out

Vantela immediately caught my eye with its soft curves, rounded edges, and cheerful ligatures. It’s not your typical serif or sans serif font. Instead, it feels like a custom-drawn letterform that’s been digitized with care. The font has a slightly cartoonish but not childish vibe — more like a clever nod to playful design without losing its professional edge. It’s a display font through and through, perfect for headlines, logos, and short-form text where you want to inject a bit of personality.

Logo Design: Testing Vantela in Real Time

I started by placing Vantela into a few logo mockups. The café’s name was short and memorable, so it worked well in all caps. I played with spacing and ligatures to create a custom feel. The built-in ligatures added a nice surprise — connecting letters in a way that felt intentional and handcrafted. It gave the logo a unique rhythm that I wouldn’t have achieved with a standard font.

One thing I noticed right away was how well Vantela balanced legibility with charm. At larger sizes, especially on digital mockups and signage, it was easy to read and visually engaging. I knew this would translate well to a storefront sign or a social media post header.

Brand Identity: Using Vantela Across Materials

Once the logo direction was approved, I began applying Vantela across the brand system. It became the primary typeface for the café’s name on menus, business cards, packaging labels, and even chalkboard signs. Because of its strong personality, I used it as a headline font and reserved a clean sans serif for body text and supporting copy.

The contrast between Vantela and the supporting sans serif was subtle but effective. It created a clear visual hierarchy, guiding the viewer’s eye naturally from the brand name to the details. This pairing worked especially well in printed marketing materials like flyers and postcards, where the font’s rounded forms softened the overall aesthetic.

Design Observations: Where Vantela Shines

As I moved into packaging mockups, I tested Vantela on label stickers for coffee bags and baked goods. In these smaller formats, I made sure to use it sparingly — usually just the café’s initials or a short tagline. At that scale, the font still held up, especially when I adjusted the weight and spacing to avoid overcrowding.

On the digital side, I used Vantela in the hero section of the café’s website mockup. Paired with a warm color palette and organic textures, it gave the homepage a welcoming and creative energy. I also applied it to Instagram story templates and promotional posts, where its lively character helped the visuals stand out in a crowded feed.

Font Pairing: Creating Balance and Contrast

Because Vantela is such a distinctive font, I knew it needed a thoughtful pairing. I chose a soft, humanist sans serif for body copy and secondary headlines. The contrast between the two was subtle but effective — the sans serif grounded the design while Vantela lifted it with personality.

In some cases, I also experimented with a light script font for accents, like “Handmade Daily” on a chalkboard menu. It worked well as a supporting typeface but never competed with Vantela’s presence. The key was balance: letting Vantela be the star while using other fonts to support clarity and structure.

Practical Tips for Using Vantela in Client Work

Final Thoughts: A Font That Feels Like a Design Partner

By the end of the project, Vantela had become more than just a font choice — it was a design partner that helped bring the café’s personality to life. It added warmth, charm, and a touch of fun to every piece of the brand identity, from printed menus to social media posts. It reminded me that the right typeface can do more than communicate a message — it can shape the emotional tone of a brand.

If you’re working on a branding project that needs a bit of whimsy without sacrificing professionalism, Vantela is worth a try. Whether it’s for a logo, packaging, or digital graphics, it’s a display font that brings a smile to the page — and to your client’s face.
